What is Cinco De Mayo and Why Do We Celebrate It?
Every year on May 5th, people across North America celebrate Cinco De Mayo with festivals, food, music, and gatherings with family and friends. But while many people recognize the holiday, not everyone knows the story behind it.

Cinco De Mayo commemorates the Mexican Army’s victory over France at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. At the time, France was considered one of the strongest military powers in the world. Despite being heavily outnumbered, Mexican forces successfully defended the city of Puebla, which became a powerful symbol of resilience, determination, and national pride.

Contrary to popular belief, Cinco De Mayo is not Mexico’s Independence Day. Mexico’s Independence Day is actually celebrated on September 16th.

Today, Cinco De Mayo is celebrated in many different ways. In Mexico, the holiday is observed most strongly in the state of Puebla, where the battle took place. In the United States and Canada, the day has also become a celebration of Mexican culture, heritage, traditions, food, and music.

Whether you’re enjoying tacos with friends, attending a local festival, or simply learning more about the holiday, Cinco De Mayo is a great opportunity to celebrate culture, history, and community. Happy Cinco De Mayo!
